A law allowing copying CDs and DVDs for personal use has been revoked nine months after it was introduced.

The decision came after a challenge from a group of music industry organisations including the Musicians’ Union, UK Music and the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (Basca).

A High Court judge ruled against the legislation change citing its lack of copyright levy.

UK music chief executive, Jo Dipple, said: “It is only right that Government gives us the standard of legislation our music deserves. We want to work with Government so this can be achieved.

“It is vitally important that fairness for songwriters, composers and performers is written into the law.”

The Government said it was now “considering the implications” of the ruling which affects CDs, DVDs, e-books and other products subject to copyright that can be digitally duplicated.
