HBO’s medieval fantasy epic Game of Thrones is our brand of the day.

It was revealed last night that the series has snagged no less than 24 Emmy nominations – more than any other TV show this year.

The news follows the finale of the drama’s fifth season, which tested the limits of many viewers with graphic sexual assault scene – addressed in full by the cast and producers at last week’s Comic-Con.

The show is based-on George R.R. Martin's best-selling book franchise A Song of Ice and Fire, which isn’t actually finished yet. Martin recently announced that he won’t be involved in writing any episodes for the sixth series so that he can spend more time on finishing the latest book in the set, The Winds of Winter.

The flagship fantasy is the most watched show in HBO’s history. Viewer figures for each episode usually clock in at around 20m, and it holds the crown for the most pirated show of all time with episodes garnering up to 2.2 million downloads just 12 hours after airing.

But not everyone can watch it. HBO's flagship show was banned by the Turkish Army, which said it wanted to safeguard young people against "sexual exploitation, pornography, exhibitionism, abuse, harassment and all negative behaviours".

Luckily the series has an extremely loyal fandom. From Game of Thrones-themed weddings and tattoos, to a course at the University of Virginia which lets enthusiasts study their favorite episodes, the show has become a cultural phenomenon.

Even the show’s iconic credits, which feature an intricate 3D clockwork map, have been recognized at the Emmys. The title sequence also got a nod from The Simpsons, who created their own spoof version back in 2012.

Overall, the cast and crew have won 116 awards and received 233 nominations, fans will have to wait until September to see if the drama will be adding any more trophies to its packed cabinet.
