Ride sharing service Uber is nursing a $7.3m fine by the government of California after it refused to divulge the cause of accident, places where drivers declined ride requests and how often it provided accessible vehicles for the disabled when requested – all of which are conditions of its operation in the state.

The penalty was imposed by a judge acting on behalf of the California Public Utilities Commission which regulates the industry after deciding that Uber had submitted insufficient information to meet its obligations.

Uber spokeswoman Eva Behrend described the move as ‘deeply disappointing’ and would appeal the fine, stating that: “Uber has already provided substantial amounts of data to the California Public Utilities Commission, information we have provided elsewhere with no complaints.”

Uber argues that by submitting more detailed stats it could undermine the privacy of its drivers and passengers.
