The number of revenge porn cases recorded in Britain has risen to its highest ever level as police struggle to process cases since new guidelines on the crime were issued by the Crown prosecution Service in October.

Forces across the country have been dealing with cases ranging from an 11-year old to pensioners after the issue came to widespread public attention following high-profile cases involving pop stars such as Rhianna and Tulisa.

Figures obtained by the Press Association under a Freedom of Information request showed that 14 forces across England and Wales received 139 revenge porn allegations between them in the six months to April 2015, of which 13 have been charged thus far.

By contrast just 149 incidents were recorded by eight forces between January 2012 and June 2014.

Sarah Green, acting director of the End Violence Against Women coalition, said: "These statistics show it is likely that awareness of so-called revenge pornography has grown and that victims likely feel more confident that this crime will be taken seriously if reported.

"We urge the police and courts to continue the pursuit of those who commit this horrible offence.”

The vast majority of cases involve former partners, usually mail, posting explicit media of their former partners online, an act which became a specific criminal offence in April.
