The New York Times is to significantly expand its London office with reports indicating it may bump its current staff roll of 65 to 100 or more as it works to transform the bureau into a digital hub.

Speaking to the Press Gazette the NYT’s president of international said that the expansion would not see the title compete directly with the British media on local issues but rather focus on Europe and international affairs.

Dunbar-Johnston said: “In a global world today, a lot of our coverage is international coverage and we want to make sure that we’re getting it up on our digital platforms in the right way, in the way that makes sense for our readers wherever they are around the world – so starting as the sun rises in the east, in Hong Kong, and moves across to Europe, and then hands back to New York.

“Our pool of competition globally has now expanded considerably because we’re competing with Facebook, Google, on the one hand, we’re competing with Buzzfeed, Huffington Post now, potentially with organisations such as Vice – all of which are expanding internationally and doing so aggressively - and rightly so.”

The growth spurt follows the recent merger of The International New York Times and the US title’s London bureau together with the arrival of the NYT’s own advertising agency, T Brand.
