Both premium cable networks have invested a lot in OTT and the future of TV on the web. HBO has their standalone service HBO Now (separate from Go, which is for their cable subscribers) and Showtime recently announced a partnership to provide a standalone version of their programming via Hulu.

As each of these network's begin a new phase of distribution it's important to understand what content is already performing well for them on their legacy web properties. Here are insights from SimilarWeb:

  • Game of Thrones predictably heads the list with the lion’s share of streaming video traffic seen by HBO Go subscribers online in May 2015, more than double that of Silicon Valley. New GoT episodes won’t appear until next season. Until then, will other shows overtake HBO’s undisputed leader?
  • The network’s viewers have a strong affinity for humor: 5 of the Top 10 shows are comedies.
  • While Silicon Valley’s high-tech satire soared to second place in HBO’s rankings, the gritty True Detective series just launched its second season in June. The complicated crime show could become a contender for second or even first place in July’s rankings.
  • The political satire Veep with Julia Louis-Dreyfus is incredibly popular. The fourth season ended in June, and HBO ordered a 5th season. Ben Travers at Indiewire observed that "Veep is incomparable in comedy," with "a style so unique [that] the series itself is entirely its own beast.”
  • HBO’s provocative documentary news show Vice is also a favorite of the network’s subscribers. The third season began in March and another is slated for 2016.
  • The fourth season of HBO’s dramedy Girls ended in March, and drew a steady following. Lena Dunham – the show’s creator, director, writer, and star – continues to keep viewers in front of their screens. Girls was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series in the Musical and Comedy category.
  • Older HBO standbys like The Wire, The Sopranos, and Sex and the City still drive considerable traffic to hbogo.com. Viewers enjoy watching these cult classics again and again.
  • Top Shows on Showtime (sho.com) in May-2015
  • Showtime’s dark Victorian psychological thriller Penny Dreadful premiered in 2014, and its second season has been a huge a success. Web traffic to the show’s network page is nearly as big as the nine other shows from the Top 10 list combined.
  • Many of the network’s subscribers have a lust for watching the sexual affairs and escapades depicted in no less than four shows: Masters of Sex, Californication, The Affair, and the Las Vegas reality show Gigolos.
  • The Golden Globes gave The Affair and award for the Best TV Series – Drama, as well as the Best Actress, TV Series Drama award to co-star Ruth Wilson in January. Wilson and Dominic West, (well-known for his role in HBO’s The Wire) are the show’s leading characters. West plays a writer and New York City school teacher who has a summer fling with Wilson’s character, an unhappily married waitress, after the two meet in Long Island’s storied Hamptons community.
  • Gritty dramas like the award winning CIA drama Homeland and Hollywood fixer Ray Donovan also draw significant interest. Homeland’s fifth season begins this September, and the Golden Globe Award-winning show appears destined to draw huge interest again.
  • Dark comedies like Shameless, Happyish, and Nurse Jackie rounded out Showtime’s Top 10 list.
