Walmart is to slug it out with Amazon in a battle for cost conscious online shoppers by announcing its own rival sale to go head-to-head with Amazon’s Prime Day bonanza.

Taking place on Wednesday the event will see thousands of items discounted online in a bid to lure customers away from its e-tailing rival.

Up for grabs will be a range of bargains in categories ranging from electronics and toys to home and baby products with lower pricing available for a period of 90 days. In a further fillip to shoppers Walmart will also temporarily cut the minimum order for free shipping from $50 to just $35.

One key differentiator between the two retailer’s is Amazon’s restriction of its best deals to Prime subscribers, who pay $99 a year for the privilege, something that Walmart has been quick to capitalise on.

Amazon has vowed to make its 15 July sale a bigger event than Black Friday as it celebrates its 20th year in business with a slew of cut price deals.
