The Mirror has built an online tool tracking the Twitter activity of footballers across Europe’s top leagues to keep its readers one step ahead of transfer speculation.

Tracking the following (and unfollowing) patterns and buzz surrounding players on the social network, the site refreshes the activity of over 1,000 verified accounts every two hours.

The tool is an example of one of the many ways modern reporters can use social media data to track trends and potential breaking stories.

Real time examples of the tool in operation include Southampton unfollowing Toby Alderweireld – heavily telegraphing his move to Tottenham Hotspur which was announced this morning.

Zoe Harris, group marketing director at Trinity Mirror, said: “Rumour Wire is the latest tool we’ve built to capture Twitter data in an innovative way. During the election our Tweetometer monitored which tweets by candidates received the highest engagement rates.

“Rumour Wire is a similar concept in that we’re monitoring data on Twitter and using it for editorial purposes.

“The transfer window is always a buzz of activity so we’re looking forward to seeing what Rumour Wire picks up next.”
