Last week Found Remote explored the most pirated TV shows of May 2015 with web analytics company SimilarWeb. Another underreported element of the ever-changing TV industry is which shows are most popular on the biggest OTT platforms. SimilarWeb has once again provided exclusive insights to Found Remote to look at the ten most popular TV shows on Netflix and Hulu from May 2015 (which will be reported on once a month).

Top Netflix shows May 2015

Here are insights from SimilarWeb:

  • When looking at the Top 10 shows on Hulu, the first thing that you notice is that almost all of them are satirical comedies!
  • Only Grey’s Anatomy, Once Upon a Time, and Flash represent different genres.
  • Hulu audiences prefer older shows that already know and like. South Park and The Daily Show are the longest running shows on Comedy Central, and Saturday Night Live has been on NBC since 1975.
  • Netflix’s audience is a bit more serious. About 50% of the top shows are comedies, while other genres representing the other half.
  • Netflix subscribers also like nostalgia, particularly the new release of old episodes of Friends in May.
  • Animated sitcoms are also hugely popular. Three of Hulu’s Top 10 shows, and one of Netflix’s Top 10 are animated sitcoms – proof that these satirical comedies not niche genres.
  • If you look at the TV networks that produced these top shows, it’s clear that the real battle is between Fox (Family Guy, Brooklyn Nines-Nine, Bob’s Burgers) and NBC (Saturday Night Live, Friends, Parks and Recreation, The Office).

It will be interesting if Hulu's launch of the full Seinfeld library will affect the most popular list next month.
