The Daily Telegraph has undergone a redesign of its print newspaper which includes changes to the typeface, content and layout of the newspaper. Changes to digital are set for a later date and details of changes to the Saturday and Sunday editions will be announced this weekend.

The overhaul coincides with the 160th anniversary of the first ever edition of the Daily Telegraph and marks the occasion with the return of the traditional gothic masthead originally used in newspaper.

The most notable change is the typeface which has now changed to Austin and will be used for the headlines and body text of the articles. The paper confirmed that this would be accompanied by an increase in size and space between lines, resulting in an average decrease of around 5 per cent in the articles. According to the newspaper this will bring it “in step with most Western newspapers” while also making its “articles far more readable”.

Features in the daily newspaper will now increase with the opening features page moving to the end of the comment pages. Each weekday feature will have a set focus - Monday will be Health, Tuesday will cover living and features, fashion is on a Wednesday, Thursday will discuss family and relationships while Friday is dedicated to lifestyle.

The Business section has also received a redesign with a dashboard of must-know facts and figures placed on the front page. The second page now dedicates more space to comment from popular business writers and integrates a new column titled ‘In the City’ which provides analysis of the day’s biggest and corporate and financial news.

The redesign follows a continuing decline in print circulation figures which saw a 5 per cent decline last month compared to May 2014. The online figures, which make it the fourth most popular national newspaper website, remain strong however and saw 4.9 million unique daily users in March.
