Jeremy Clarkson has confirmed he is set to make a dramatic return to television screens as host of a new car show, with former Top Gear colleagues James May and Richard Hammond in tow.

The Sunday Times reports that an official announcement is expected within a matter of weeks with the rumour mill going into overdrive amidst suggestions that the trio are on the cusp of signing up to Netflix - most recently after the Daily Mirror cited 'sources' saying a deal was 'very close'.

Any programming commissioned as a result of the deal isn’t likely to be made available until next March at the earliest however.

Clarkson’s former bosses at the BBC meanwhile are pressing ahead with their own reboot of the Top Gear franchise, having signed up Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans as host of the hit show’s 23rd season.

Netflix has striven to differentiate itself in an increasingly competitive market for online streaming services by commissioning original content such as House of Cards and Orange is the New Black.
