The company stated that it “has determined La Boulange stores are not sustainable for the company’s long-term growth” in a blog post announcing the closures.

La Boulange was acquired by Starbucks in 2012 for $100m as Starbucks focused on expanding its food offerings.

The brand’s pastries and other items will still be offered at US and Canada Starbucks locations.

According to Starbucks, all employees working at La Boulange will be treated with the “utmost care." The company added that it will help them “find new positions at Starbucks stores in the area”.

The coffee chain stated that its food business saw a 16 per cent increase last quarter and that its new breakfast sandwiches have contributed to a 35 per cent rise in breakfast sales year-over-year.
