Food giant Nestlé has been ordered to destroy £32m of its popular Maggi branded noodles from sale by the Indian government after the snack was deemed "unsafe and hazardous".

Until now Nestle had commanded 80 per cent of the noodle market on the subcontinent but will now be forced to withdraw stock from store shelves and distribution warehouses for destruction while it contests the decision.

In a statement Nestle said: "There will be additional costs to take into account, for example bringing stock from the market, transporting the stock to the destruction points, destruction cost etc. The final figure will have to be confirmed at a later date."

The recall was ordered after inspectors found lead quantities exceeded maximum allowable standards, an accusation Nestlé contests. It argues that there are "issues of interpretation" around the results and has asked to see the laboratory test results.
