Apple is to rely on old-fashioned journalism rather than hi-tech curation algorithms to populate its recently unveiled Apple News app, after the tech firm launched a recruitment drive for a team of editors.

Launching as part of the general iOS9 release later this year journalism graduates are being sought with experience in content analytics and social tools as well as time spent on a newsroom floor.

An advert placed on Apple’s own website read: “The Apple News team is looking for passionate, knowledgeable editors to help identify and deliver the best in breaking national, global, and local news.

“These editors will help News users find the best and most timely coverage of major news events, while also managing select categories based on their areas of professional expertise.”

Apple’s human touch contrasts sharply with the approach being pursued by rival services such as Fliboard and Facebook which employ custom algorithms to guide the app in what to show the reader.

No word has been forthcoming as to whether Apple intends the new service to be fully free of commercial influence, or whether negative stories may be censored.
