Vehicle brand Jaguar Land Rover is positioning itself at the forefront of research into the condition of Britain’s roads with the launch of a ‘Pothole Alert’ technology pushed designed to detect, predict and share data on potholes, broken drains and missing manhole covers.

Working in partnership with Coventry City Council the team will seek to identify the best means of sharing this data with other road users and the authorities to prioritise repairs, reduce accidents and minimise vehicle damage such as punctures.

The Range Rover Evoque research vehicle contains cutting edge technology which allows it to adjust suspension in a matter of milliseconds to deal with such obstacles upon receipt of a warning from the car in front or else notify the driver allowing evasive action to be taken.

Dr Mike Bell, global connected car director, Jaguar Land Rover, said: “OurMagneRide equipped Range Rover Evoque and Discovery Sport vehicles feature sophisticated sensors that allow the vehicle to profile the road surface under the wheels and identify potholes, raised manholes and broken drain covers. By monitoring the motion of the vehicle and changes in the height of the suspension, the car is able to continuously adjust the vehicle’s suspension characteristics, giving passengers a more comfortable ride over uneven and damaged road surfaces.”

JLR is also developing a forward facing stereo digital camera capable of scanning the road ahead for obstacles ahead of contact, rather than wait for a collision to occur – a key step on the road to driverless cars.
