Coffee chain Costa is to give its customers the option to square up via Apple Pay as it joins an exclusive group of early adopters to sign up to the new contactless payment service from launch.

The service will be rolled out across the majority of Costa’s UK estate, putting it on the same boat as rival chain Pret A Manger, which will also give customers the option to speed up payment by opting for their phone instead of their wallet.

Jon Fisher, head of mobile and loyalty at Costa commented “At Costa we always put the customer at the heart of everything we do. We currently provide contactless payment across the majority of our UK stores, which is proving really popular, so offering Apple Pay will make our customer experience even more seamless whilst maintaining privacy and security.”

It is the latest move toward a cashless society with Apple believing it has cracked the security concerns which have previously hindered adoption, opting for an encryption method which sees a unique device account number linking a credit or debit card to a phone – rather than rely on storing the card number directly.
