Sandwich chain Subway has pledged to get rid of artificial flavors, colors, and preservatives in its food over the next 18 months.

The company is the latest in a string of fast-food chains, including Taco Bell and Panera, to make its food more natural as consumers increasingly prefer healthier options.

A company statement announcing the changes said: “We are committed to choice and quality, but we also take wellness and environmental responsibility very seriously.”

The changes will take place in the company’s North American locations.

Subway has already started to work towards this goal. This year it introduced an all-natural roast beef recipe and removed caramel color from its steak and pastrami.
