The Liberal Democrats have opened an online book of condolence for former leader Charles Kennedy, who passed away yesterday at the age of 55 following a long battle against alcoholism.

Under his leadership the party won a record 62 seats at the 2005 general election courtesy of its opposition to the Iraq war, but Kennedy’s triumph was short-lived as party members forced him to stand down just eight months later when his addiction became public.

In later years Kennedy confirmed his rebel status by being the only Liberal Democrat MP to vote against forming a coalition with the Conservatives in 2010.

People can leave messages of condolence via the dedicated website, where they will be accumulated and forwarded on to the family.

In a statement to party members current party leader Nick Clegg, who is standing down following the party’s general election defeat which saw it win just eight seats, wrote: “The sad news of Charles Kennedy's death has shocked us all today. Perhaps you met him, worked or campaigned alongside him, or maybe you simply have memories of the great things he said and did. I personally valued his kindness, humour and generosity, and I know that our country will be the poorer without his courage and wisdom.

“If you wish to leave a message, it will be forwarded to Charles's family, or you can just add your name if you prefer.”
