News UK’s managing director of its commercial arm Paul Hayes is to leave the business after 15 years and will be replaced by commercial director Dominic Carter.

Hayes departs this summer with Carter set to take on his responsibilities from July when he will get to work on implementing his own strategy. Carter’s promotion will give him oversight of all advertising activity at The Sun publisher, including 375 people across its national and regional commercial teams.

The change was revealed to staff last Friday (22 May) when News UK’s chief executive Mike Darcey sent out an internal email thanking Hayes for his contribution to the publisher.

Hayes, a well-respected figure within the publishing industry, spearheaded a number of initiatives during his tenure as the publisher’s commercial chief. Most recently, he was shepherding industry initiatives to find an alternative to the National Readership Survey as well as the creation of the automated ad system PATS (Pubisher Advertising Transaction System, both of which he will likely complete before he leaves.

Hayes said: "I've enjoyed a great career at News UK, achieving many things and having worked with some of the best in the business, I will miss them all very much. However the media sector has never been so vibrant or offered such a range of options and I want to bring everything I've learnt from my time here to add value to other opportunities that people have been kind enough to discuss with me."

Mike Darcey, chief executive of News UK, added: “Paul has made a major contribution to this company, bringing leadership and vision over many years. He has also fostered and developed the careers of many people in the organisation. I am therefore delighted to that Dominic Carter has agreed to lead the advertising function and I wish Paul every success in the future.”

It sees the end of Hayes’ 15-year, second stint at the business, having joined The TImes in 1985. Four years later he moved to the Telegraph Media Group and was part of the team that launched the Electronic Telegraph in 1994, which is regarded by some observers as the first newspaper to have a digital version online.

He returned to the publisher in 2000, which was then known as News International, as general manager before being promoted to managing director of Times Newspapers two years later. In 2009, he became the group’s commercial director, which gave him responsibility for The Sun and The News of the World.

Carter joined the business in 1991, holding a number of roles across The Sun and Times newspapers, before leaving in 2000 to become group advertising director at the Mirror Group. He returned to News UK in 2006 as trading director of The Times and Sunday Times, a role which expanded in 2008 to cover The Sun. Carter was appointed commercial director in 2011 in the wake of an overhaul of the commercial team, which gave him responsibility for all the publisher’s print and digital revenues.
