The announcement makes Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway-owned company the latest fast-food chain to remove sugary drinks from childrens' menus, following similar moves from McDonald’s, Wendy’s and Burger King.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) was the primary catalyst behind the change, along with other health advocacy groups such as MomsRising.org.

CSPI nutrition policy director Margo Wootan said in a statement: “Dairy Queen deserves credit for being responsive to the concerns of parents, who increasingly want to be able to order off the kids’ menu without having to say ‘no’ to soda. That DQ’s Franchise Advisory Council voted unanimously to adopt this policy shows the depth of the company’s commitment.”

She added that she hopes chains like Applebee’s and Chili’s will make similar moves.

The change goes into effect on 1 September 2015.
