Liberal Democrat head front runner Tim Farron's shift in terminology has sparked rumours of a possible change of the party name to ‘the Liberals’.

Farron repeatedly referred to the party as ‘the Liberals’ on BBC Today, fueling speculation that the party is looking to rebrand after a poor election which saw it drop from almost 50 to eight MPs.

On the show, Farron, the bookmakers’ favourite to lead the party, said: “There’s only one thing we can do now, and that is turn our anger into action.

“Above all else create a sense of purpose and meaning behind the Liberals throughout the United Kingdom. There is a burning desire to make sure Britain’s liberal voice doesn’t just survive but thrives too.”

A Telegraph poll of over 2,000 readers, at the time of publication, saw two thirds of respondents admit that the party should change its name to ‘the Liberals’.

Farron has distanced himself from reports of the rebrand - without actually denying them.
