Tesco is to close its remaining six Homeplus stores across the UK as it looks to focus solely on its food business.

The closures will result in a total of 450 jobs with stores in Bristol, Bracknell, Nottingham, Denton, Bromborough and Preston set to close 27 June, according to Reuters.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We've taken the difficult decision to close our remaining six Homeplus stores.

“Our priority is now to explain what this announcement means for our colleagues and wherever possible, offer them alternative roles with Tesco.”

This comes after the retailer announced a record annual pre-tax loss of £6.4bn in 2014 – the worst in its 97-year history.
