A landmark moment in the world of liquid refreshments has been reached with confirmation that sales of bottled water have now overtaken fizzy juice to become the world’s most popular packaged drink.

Reflecting an increasingly health conscious population total bottled water sales are expected to hit 233bn litres this year, significantly ahead of carbonated juice which is expected to sell 227bn litres.

The crossover is a significant moment and highlights the rapid ascendency of h2o from its position just five years ago, when a mere 170bn litres of branded water was sold versus 215bn litres of ginger.

The figures were compiled by the Canadean market research group which highlighted emerging markets as being behind the revolution, with consumption in India, China and Brazil rising by 10 per cent – versus just 1 per cent in developed markets such as Germany and France.

Analyst Fiona Baillie commented: “With nearly one-third of the world’s population residing in these countries the impact is significant. Packaged water is often necessary in areas susceptible to flooding or other natural occurrences, as these often lead to water contamination and the spread of diseases.”
