Sportswear brand Nike has vowed to strengthen its collaboration with Apple, promising a new generation of apps for the tech titan’s newly introduced Apple Watch.

There are currently around 60 million people using Nike’s fitness apps, including Android users, who can track workouts, runs and calorie consumption using a raft of device sensors.

Speaking to CNBC Nike chief executive Mark Parker said: "We're excited about the potential that the Apple-Nike relationship has. [Consumers can expect] more from Apple and Nike, two great brands, lots of potential and opportunity, and that continues."

Nike is moving away from the wearable hardware market, exemplified by products such as its Fuel wristband, to focus on software such as its Nike+ running app.
