The public’s first introduction to the Apple Watch has got off to a low key start today with the device only on sale in just six high-end retailers worldwide.

Eschewing the traditional midnight launch with fans snaking around the block to be amongst the first to get hold of a device, Apple has instead opted to restrict supply to just six boutique stores ahead of a general roll out in June.

Limited supplies of the hardware have forced Apple’s hand, leaving most fans to order online and submit themselves to the vagaries of a delivery schedule that may see them waiting by their letterbox for months.

Amongst those to get a limited batch of models is London based Dover Street Market, although even here no queues are in evidence. Instead, would-be purchasers are being asked to phone in advance to arrange a viewing by appointment only.

Further restrictions limit purchases to one per customer and only people with an iPhone will be able to walk out the door with an Apple Watch.

Five other stores in Paris, Milan, Tokyo, Los Angeles and Berlin have also received limited supplies.
