Music recognition app Shazam is set to release an Apple Watch app in a move which could further boost music discovery on the wearable.

Apple Watch owners will be able to pick up the app on Friday 24 April. Using it they will be able to match track names and artists to the songs they listen to, with an option to purchase, directing them to the iTunes Store.

Using the Handoff feature, Shazam will suggest tracks for listeners based on their favourite tracks and previous Shazams.

The app can also stream song lyrics to users’ wrists for fans of impromptu karaoke.

Daniel Danker, Shazam chief product officer, said: “Experience the Shazam app when Apple Watch starts to hit stores on April 24. But let’s not spoil the surprise – we’ll share more details closer to launch so you can try your hand at this whole new way to Shazam.”

MacRumours notes that other day-one apps on the Apple Watch will be Microsoft OneDrive, Porsche Car Connect, Fifa 15 Ultimate Team, Epicurious, Nick Jr, Espn, Avea, JetBlue and Letterpad.

On Monday Instagram announced it had also joined the fold.
