AOL has bolstered its commercial team hiring Alex Macnamara as its first head of multinational agency sales, as part of an ongoing strategy to push its ad tech stack further into the media plans of more advertisers.

Macnamara returns to the business after 10 years to lead a team of international sellers formed to boost the revenue it gains from global agency groups.

A key part of his role will be to drive growth across the breadth of AOLs media and technology offerings.

He will report to Georgia Giannattasio, head of multinational at AOL.

The newly-created role comes as the media owner looks to crystalise an ad tech proposition that will champion the value of its own cross-device measurement and targeting against the scale offered by larger rivals.

The appointment beefs up a multinational sales team that has already seen the recent arrivals of international sales directors Clare Pedersen and Thomas Bailly, who join from the Guardian and Microsoft Advertising respectively.

Macnamara joins from Tremor Video where he has been UK managing director since 2013.

The expansion of AOL’s sales team comes as the business launches its latest ad tech addition Convertro in the UK in an attempt to scoop up as much as it can of programmatic budgets.

Advertisers are increasingly advised by their media agencies to purchase remnant inventory in this way as a way of minimising waste and AOL is carefully assembling an offering that can offer full programmatic service around display and video content.
