Walgreens to close 200 drugstores across the US in effort to trim expenses by $1.5bn
Walgreens Boots Alliance will close 200 stores across in order to trim expenses by $1.5bn by the end of 2017.
The drugstore chain currently operates 8,330, stores in the US, US Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico, so disruptions as a result of the closures will likely be minimal.
The alliance has been operating without a chief since the departure of Greg Wasson late last year.
“While we work through this process in a deliberate and methodical manner to fill such a critical role, we are making the necessary business decisions to move us forward,” said executive chairman Jim Skinner.
Earlier this month, Walgreens announced that it would be partnering with NBC and M&Ms to bring Red Nose Day to the US.
