Troubled TV franchise Top Gear dominated the BBC iPlayer streaming chart in February, driving the platform to record levels of TV engagement.

The BBC in February saw an average daily request for TV streaming sit at a record high of 8.6m a day, with four Top Gear episodes among its top five most viewed shows.

The second episode of Top Gear Season 22 received 2.65m plays on the iPlayer. Another three episodes filled the top five, with Eastenders’ flashback episode in which the killer of Lucy Beale was revealed coming fourth, pulling in 2m plays.

A major worry for the BBC’s March forecast will be the cancellation of three Top Gear episodes, following the announcement that Jeremy Clarkson is to leave the broadcaster as a result of his punch up with show producer Oisin Tymon.

This comes after the platform saw record numbers of streaming across its TV and radio offering in January, receiving 343m stream requests. Also worth noting is the fact that mobile and tablet engagement was at an all-time high of nearly 50 per cent.

Below are the top five most viewed BBC shows in February:

1. Top Gear series 22, E.2 - 2.65 million

2. Top Gear series 22, E.3 - 2.34 million

3. Top Gear series 22, E.4 - 2.1 million

4. EastEnders Flashback, 19 Feb - 2.02 million

5. Top Gear series 22, E. 5 - 1.99 million
