Facebook has followed in Meerkat and Periscope’s stead by launching its own video collaboration app - Riff.

Users can shoot video segments of up to 20 seconds and share them through the app with the unique selling point being friends can contribute to the content to build a video collage.

This is the latest app from the Facebook Creative Labs which has previously released Paper, Slingshot, Mentions, Rooms and Groups.

Josh Miller, Facebook product manager, said: “The potential pool of creative collaborators can grow exponentially from there, so a short video can become an inventive project between circles of friends you can share to Facebook or anywhere on the internet.”

Miller stated that the app was inspired by the slew of viral Ice Bucket Challenge videos which took Facebook by storm last year – with the logic of improving sharing capabilities by threading the videos together.

The service is available for download to smart devices from the Google Play and the App Store.
