Live video-sharing app Meerkat has raised an estimated $14m in funding following the service’s launch just in time for SXSW earlier this month.

The results of the fundraiser emerged just hours after Twitter launched Periscope, a live micro-vlogging app, which has the added benefit of being directly embeddable with Twitter – a feature which was swept away from Meerkat earlier this month.

Meerkat founder Ben Rubin said during the announcement which utilised the Meerkat live-stream that he’d been “inundated” with queries from possible investors.

Those now on board with the app include, Chad Hurley, YouTube co-founder, actor and musican, Jared Leto, and Ashton Kutcher.

It remains to be seen whether the first-to-the-market Meerkat or the Twitter-supported Periscope will achieve dominance of the flourishing live-streaming app market.
