BT has announced it is to re-enter Britain’s competitive 4G mobile market with the launch of three new SIM only plans for existing BT Broadband customers, offering data, text and minutes bundles for as little as £5 per month.

In an effort to lure custom to its platform the provider will offer access to free BT Sport via its BT Sport app (including live Premier League matches) and appeal to families with built-in spending caps on its tariffs.

John Petter, chief executive of BT Consumer, said: “Offering BT customers the UK’s best value 4G data deal is a great way to start our journey towards re-establishing ourselves as a major player in consumer mobile.”

This is the first stage in BT’s mobile strategy after agreeing to purchase mobile operator EE for £12.5bn last year. In the years ahead it intends to meet ever growing data demand by marrying its fixed fibre service with wi-fi and mobile services.

BT Broadband customers can plump for 500 MB of 4G data, unlimited texts and 200 minutes for £5 a month (£10 a month if not). This can be upgraded to 2GB, with unlimited texts and 500 minutes for £12 a month (£17) and, at the top end, customers can opt for 20GB, with unlimited texts and minutes, for £20 or £25 a month for non-BT Broadband customers.
