Channel 4 has kicked off its latest campaign, led by 4Creative, to promote the most hyped event in horse-racing's calendar, the Crabbie’s Grand National Festival.

The 60-second ad, produced by Nexus, is set to air Friday 20 March on Channel 4 and tells the the story of ‘The Outsider’ – a unicorn foal with underdeveloped wings and a twisted horn.

The campaign aims to inspire a new generation of horse racing fans by showcasing the speed, stamina, strength and determination of a Grand National winning racehorse.

John Allison and Chris Bovill, heads of 4Creative, said: “People love the grand national because even the outsider has a chance. We wanted to dramatise this whilst at the same time blowing the whistle on all the prejudiced unicorns out there.”

Commissioned by Channel 4 group marketing manager Ros Godber, the film was brought to life by award winning Nexus directors Alan Smith and Adam Foulkes, sound was provided by Siren and the music was composed by Alex Baranowski.

Nexus directors Smith and Foulkes said: “We were tasked by Channel 4 to inspire a new generation of horse racing fans ahead of this year’s highly anticipated Grand National.

"In order to capture the nation’s imagination and heart, we tell the story of an unlikely hero’s epic journey, defying the odds to become a champion racehorse."

The Crabbie’s Grand National Festival will broadcast live on Channel 4 from 9-11 April.
