German discount retailer Aldi could be primed to launch its first online shopping platform in the UK as it steps up its assault on the top four supermarkets.

Reuters spotted a report in German trade journal Lebensmittel Zeitung claiming that the company was considering launching an online presence, a strategy it has to this day avoided, in Germany and the UK.

Aldi, which is the world’s largest discount chain, already delivers alcoholic beverages in Australia, but would be making a considerable advancement on its e-commerce offering globally with such a launch.

A move into UK e-commerce would see the firm up against tough competition from already established services from the big chains including Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's and Morrisons.

This follows the news from Kantar Worldpanel that the German firm has a five per cent share of the UK retail market.
