Disney has moved to ban smoking in all its PG 13 rated films in future, outlawing the practice in all Marvel, LucasFilm and Pixar produced content.

The prohibition edict will apply across the board to burnish the studio’s family-friendly image with the only exceptions being depictions of real-life figures in which the habit was part of their cultural or historical background.

Giving an example Disney CEO Bob Iger said: “For instance, we’ve been doing a movie on Abraham Lincoln, he was a smoker, and we would consider that acceptable,” Iger said. “But in terms of any new characters that are created for any of those films, under any of those labels, we will absolutely prohibit smoking in any of those films.”

Disney films have long association with smoking including the caterpillar character in the 1951 production of Alice in Wonderland who puffed a hookah pipe and Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmations.
