Avid movie goers who used to capitalise on the Orange Wednesday promotion may be pleased to hear that they can wring one more pair of free movie tickets out of their old Orange sim card.

Following the demise of Orange Wednesday in January after parent company EE claimed the promotion's popularity had peaked, O2 has announced that it will grant free cinema tickets to those who post the company their old Orange sim cards.

In a serious of mysterious tweets uploaded on social media networks over the last few days, the mobile carrier issued a call to action to former Orange users.

In a statement on a newly created 'RIPOrangeWednesday' microsite, the company said: “Wednesday. The day that nobody really likes, because it’s too far from either weekend that surrounds it, has a few nicknames. And, for over a decade, it’s had another one: Orange Wednesdays.

“Thanks to an admittedly great marketing promotion, which might also be the longest-running one ever, as it started in a world before Facebook and Twitter existed… Brits have grown accustomed to seeing, sending or receiving a ‘Can someone send me an Orange Wednesday please?’ message in some form or another.”

“To wave a fond farewell to Orange Wednesdays, we’re taking it upon ourselves to extend it for a bit. And all it’ll cost you is that old, now-defunct Orange or EE sim.”

The company announced that the first 200 people who sent their old Orange sim card to ‘260 Bath Road, Slough, SL1 4DX’ along with their name, address, date of birth and contact number, will receive a free pair of cinema tickets.

The firm also claimed: “We’ve also got a little something planned for all these sim cards so stay tuned to @O2 on Twitter.”
