NBC Universal has appointed former NBC News chief Andy Lack as chairman of NBC News and MSNBC.

The announcement follows the crisis that led to the suspension of “Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams, who recently broke his trust with viewers after admitting that he made false claims about coming under fire in a helicopter in Iraq in 2003.

Lack will replace Pat Fili-Krushel, who previously served as the head of NBC Universal News Group.

Fili-Krushel will move to a different corporate role as chief executive of NBC Universal and executive vice president of Comcast Steve Burke’s team, according to a staff memo sent out by Burke.

President of NBC News Deborah Turness and president of MSNBC Phil Griffin will both report to Lack. President of CNBC Mark Hoffman will report directly to Burke as Lack will not be overseeing CNBC.

Lack will start in April and will report directly to Burke.

Before returning to NBC, Lack served as the CEO of the Broadcasting Board of Governors. He first joined NBC News in 1993 as president.
