At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Google said it plans to launch a wireless service in the US.

Sundar Pichai

Sundar Pichai, the Google executive who oversees Android, said the service would be small-scale and would not intend to compete with the four big U.S. carriers: T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint.

Rather, he said it would aim to demonstrate technical innovations that carriers could adopt.

Pichai added that Google has spoken with carriers about its plans for the service. He said Google would team up with carriers to launch the service but did not name any in particular.

“Partners like Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint in the U.S. are what powers most of our Android phones,” he said, according to the Wall Street Journal. “And the model works extremely well for us. And so there’s no reason for us to course correct.”

He said details will be announced in the coming months.
