Apple has announced the date of its San Francisco launch event for its first foray into the wearable tech industry, the Apple Watch.

On Monday 9 March, Apple will unveil to the international media - and the public - its first truly new technology following the death of Steve Jobs.

With Tim Cook previously admitting the device will be available to the public by April, it’s looking that the smartwatches may just see a launch for the end of March, following the event.

The invitation reads: “Please join us for an invitation-only event at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco on Monday, March 9, at 10am.”

The Apple Watch may face tough competition from the Pebble Time, an e-paper smartwatch with a seven day battery which earlier this week raised over $10m on Kickstarter within 48 hours.

To accommodate the Apple Watch launch, Apple's design chief Jony Ive and senior vice president of retail and online stores Angela Ahrendts reshuffled the brand's store to best display the new wearable device.
