An Apple car could be on the horizon after reports claimed the technology giant is assembling a team of automotive experts to design an "Apple-branded electric vehicle".

The Wall Street Journal says "several hundred" employees are already working on the project, which has been codenamed "Titan" and is being developed in secret.

An unnamed source told the paper the team is working on a design that "resembles a minivan".

The Financial Times also carries the story today but is more circumspect, saying Sir Jonathan Ive's team of Apple designers "has held regular meetings with automotive executives and engineers in recent months, in some cases trying to hire them".

While a move into car manufacturing would represent a major leap for a company better known for handheld devices, Apple has already shown an eagerness to take its technology on the road.

Last year it introduced its 'CarPlay' system for Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo vehicles, allowing iPhone owners to use the features of their devices more easily and safely while in the car.

Along with its major rival Google, Apple is said to be competing to have car manufacturers adopt its operating system in their dashboards.

Those hoping for a new Apple runaround should not get too carried away just yet, however.

The company has declined to comment on the rumours and as all today's reports point out, it is not uncommon for Apple to test drive new designs which then never see the light of day.
