The Queen has burnished her social media credentials after taking centre stage in a family photo uploaded to Facebook following a meeting with the Earl and Countess of Wessex at Buckingham Palace.

Recording the event for posterity was the Duke of York who was on hand with his camera to snap the meeting before uploading it to his personal Facebook account, ordinarily a conduit for dry official proclamations.

Beneath the snap Prince Andrew wrote: “A family photo before we join guests at my brother and sister-in-law’s joint 50th birthday reception at Buckingham palace, to recognise the important work with their many organisations.”

Despite having a regular presence on Twitter and Facebook messages are posted by a communications team rather than the family directly, making Andrew’s off the cuff contribution significant.

Stars in attendance at the glitzy event included dame Esther Rantzen and Matt Smith who thanked charitable volunteers and members of the armed forces.
