JetBlue Airways will be the first airline to accept mobile-based payments using Apple Pay.

The US based airline plans to implement near field communication (NFC) mobile payments on all flights allowing customers to purchase food, beverages and on board amenities from their smartphones and tablets.

To accommodate the transactions, iPad minis with NFC-enabled cases will be distributed to 3,500 crew members, using specially designed iOS to enable crew to access on-the-go customer and flight data.

Marty St George, senior vice president of commercial at JetBlue, said: “The sky is definitely not the limit when it comes to mobile payments with Apple Pay.

“Customers want an easy and fast transaction when they decide to make an on-board purchase so that they can get back to enjoying their flight.”

Apple Pay will roll out across the airline in March with a view to having it fully implemented by June.
