University students sitting exams in future whilst wearing a watch face having their wrists slapped after education chiefs voiced fears that a new generation of smart watches could be used to cheat.

Due to the visual similarities between internet connected watch and one used simply to tell the time all such wrist mounted gadgets are set to be confiscated by invigilators before tests.

The ban comes ahead of the launch of Apple’s much hyped iWatch this April following reports of at least two students being caught glancing at currently available smart watches, potentially allowing them to look-up answers, access notes or message other candidates.

Amongst the first to recognise the issue was the University of London which warned: “Smartwatches may become a problem in the examination hall from 2015 and beyond.”

As a result it is treating such devices in the same manner as smartphones and tablets with desk clocks provided for those anxious to keep track of time.
