Microsoft will seek to put the woes of Windows 8 behind it later tonight when it bypasses the ninth iteration of its operating system to go straight for the big 10 in an effort to hold its ground against Google and Apple.

Analysts expect the Redmond based firm to unwind some of the more controversial changes made to its software the last time around; including reinstatement of the start menu and may even make the system available for free in a last ditch effort to win back mobile customers.

Windows has dominated the desktop PC market but has struggled to translate that success into mobile domains, which are dominated by Android and iOS. To add to Microsoft’s woes consumers are expected to buy three times as many mobile gadgets as they will PC’s this year, further crowding out Microsoft.

To combat this Microsoft has set itself the challenge of building a one size fits all package that will operate across the full gamut of devices from PC’s and laptops to tablets and smartphones.
