NBCUniversal, under the Comcast Corp, has announced that it will offer 11-hours of free online streaming before, during and after Super Bowl XLIX on 1 February.

Viewers can watch the action, normally reserved online for paying TV customers, on the NBC Sports Live Extra website, and the NBC Sports Live Extra app on tablets. Users will not be asked to input a username and password as they normally would. However, the free streaming doesn’t apply to smartphone users as the National Football League (NFL) has exclusively given those rights to Verizon.

The move is one of the many designed to help expand NBC’s “TV Everywhere” campaign – a push to attract younger audiences by making live streaming of television accessible on-the-go 24/7, said Alison Moore, executive vice president of the programme for NBCU.

“We are leveraging the massive digital reach of the Super Bowl to help raise overall awareness of TV Everywhere by allowing consumers to explore our vast TVE offering with this special one-day-only access,” she said in a release.

TV Everywhere first streamed the NFL in 2012, being the first company to do so online at the time. Now, the program has made history again, being the first to attain rights to stream the half-time show. The performers at this year’s show are set to include Lenny Kravitz, and Katy Perry.

Streaming will begin at 12 PM ET and will end at 11 PM ET – after a showing of ‘The Blacklist.’

The Comcast Corporation has yet to respond to The Drum’s request for comment.
