Minecraft is set to feature The Simpsons in its latest brand extension, but only for users of parent company Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Xbox One consoles.

Set to launch in February, the characters will be available as downloadable content for the Xbox game editions, featuring The Simpsons family and 19 other characters.

The deal, inked by Microsoft and Twentieth Century Fox, was pushed forward by Minecraft users who voiced a desire for The Simpsons to feature on the game.

“We have an active community of more than 17 million die-hard Minecrafters on Xbox Live enjoying the wide range of downloadable content on Xbox, and they have been clamouring for us to bring Simpsons characters to the game,” Microsoft’s Xbox chief Phil Spencer was quoted in The Guardian.

Microsoft paid $2.5bn to buy Minecraft's developer, Mojang, in 2014.
