A Labour councillor who went a step too far in poking fun at his political rivals has been suspended after posting a doctored Conservative campaign poster likening the party to Nazis.

Rosemary Healy shared an image of the Conservatives ‘Road to Recovery’ poster campaign manipulated to display a photograph of a Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz, including the words: “More people on zero hours. More tax cuts for the rich. No more NHS.”

The scare tactics ultimately backfired however and Healy was subsequently forced to offer ‘profound apologies’ for any offence caused.

In a later tweet Healy, who is an executive assistant for community protection at Nottingham Council, wrote: “Profound apologies for that retweet which was a genuine mistake and would never have been retweeted had I recognised it for what it was."
