Sony has announced the return of its iconic Walkman music player, although nostalgic music enthusiasts may be displeased to hear the device will cost £949.

The Sony Walkman ZX2

The Japanese firm announced the Walkman ZX2 at CES 2015 on Monday, dubbing the device "the fruit of continuous refinement in high audio quality technologies”.

The music-player will play high definition content such as DSD, WAV, AIFF and FLAC files with higher quality playback than the compressed MP3 files typical on smartphones.

The ZX2 can also use wireless streaming to Bluetooth speakers, capable of connecting to devices via near field communication contact.

With the high retail price the music player is unlikely to stoke up the consumer enthusiasm the brand had in its heyday, however the ZX2 boasts 60 hours of battery life and 128GB of memory, with Sony likening it to the “musical equivalent of having a veil removed from your ears”.

The Walkman will be released in Europe spring 2015; it will be a long shot from the firm’s Walkman cassette players which were first released in 1979.
