Disruptive technology featured as Kickstarter raised £347m in 2014

Fundraising website Kickstarter has announced that it raised a record £347m for thousands of ideas and products in 2014.

Technology projects pulled the most capital accounting for £82m of donations, followed by design and gaming products which accounted for £63m and £58.5m respectively.

Music proved to be the most popular project category boasting 4,009 funded campaigns, video schemes followed seeing 3,846 successful entries.

Overall, 22,252 projects reached the required start-up costs with the help of 3.3 million donors.The website mustered an astonishing £658 per minute in successful donations.

The Kickstarter 2014 summary read: “New ideas, big and small, came from people everywhere, and millions of people worked together to make them a reality. Thanks for letting us be a part of it. We can’t wait to see what’s next.”

Among the year's most popular projects was the return of kids educational show Reading Rainbow hosted by LeVar Burton, musician Neil Young’s Pono Music music player and the Hendo Hoverboard - inspired by the movie Back to the Future.

Since the site was launched in 2009, it has attracted almost £1bn worth of pledges, funding over 76,900 products.
