Netflix has launched a smart TV evaluation programme which will see the best sets granted the streaming service’s seal of approval.

The Netflix Recommended TV seal will be awarded to smart TVs that offer high performance, easy menu navigation and new features that improve the overall viewing experience.

In spring 2015, the Netflix Recommended TV logo will start appearing on sets with Sony Electronics, LG Electronics, Sharp Electronics, VIZIO and manufacturers of Roku TV all set to initially receive the branding. The scheme was announced on Monday by Netflix's chief of streaming and partnerships, Greg Peters, at CES 2015.

It will be piloted in the US and will direct those in the market for a TV to the finest 4K sets before being rolled out globally.

Masashi Imamura, president of Sony Visual Products, said: “As more and more of Sony Bravia customers choose streaming to watch movies and TV shows, the Netflix Recommended TV program will point them to some of the innovative features we're introducing to make internet TV just as easy and intuitive as linear TV.”

William Cho, president and chief executive of LG Electronics USA, added: “WebOS Smart TVs are designed to make navigating today’s state-of-the-art TV systems fast and simple, so that consumers can spend more time enjoying the content they love. “

“We are thrilled to be part of this program that recognizes and communicates the quality of the Netflix experience on smart TVs.”

Earlier on Monday it emerged that Netflix had commenced an operation to block proxy tourists spoofing their geographical locations to access media libraries only accessible in other regions.
